When one or more problems are identified during a health screening, including testing positive for HIV, the student is referred to the Mpilonhle nurse assigned to the unit, who will further evaluate the student’s condition. The nurse provides treatment and counseling as appropriate, and works closely with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Department of Health to refer to local clinics students with more complex or difficult problems, including provision of anti-retroviral therapy if required. All treatment provided is consistent with Provincial Department of Health Guidelines and all Mpilonhle nurses are trained in community nursing and have licenses to prescribe medicines.
