Computer literacy & training
Each mobile unit includes a computer laboratory equipped with 24 individual computers. The computers are available to students during the day, after hours, on weekends, and during school holidays.
Students receive six hours annually of structured computer training in small-group sessions. During the sessions, students are trained in how to use the computer, the use of basic software, including word processing and spreadsheets, and the use of email and the World Wide Web. In addition to basic computer training, students have access to educational health material, including information on HIV and AIDS and self-tests for knowledge of HIV and other health issues.

Mpilonhle is part of the 50x15 initiative sponsored by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). These computers are UVC (Ultra Value Client) computers developed by INVENEO. These computers are specifically designed to function in the rural settings where Mpilonhle works.
Hardware:
The computers are rugged, inexpensive, provide a high degree of functionality, have energy-saving LCD screens, and are compatible with open source operating systems and software.
Specs for these computers:
- Low-power FIC Mini PC Ion A603 Computer with AMD Geode LX800 (500mhz) processor
- Four USB ports
- 2G flash memory or 40G hard drive (optional)
- LCD monitor
- USB keyboard and dust-resistant USB optical mouse
Each of these computers also implements state-of-the-art fingerprint recognition software as well as Microsoft USB fingerprint readers for user identification and logon purposes.
Because many of the schools that the mobile units visit do not have reliable access to electricity, the computers can work on the 9-volt power provided by a generator.
