Charlize Theron Visit to Mpilonhle

16 May 2009

Academy Award winning actress and United Nations Messenger of Peace, Ms. Charlize Theron, visited Mpilonhle on the 24th and 25th of March.  Ms. Ashlee Irish, who is the head of philanthropic activities for Ms. Theron, accompanied her.

Ms. Theron, who through her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), provided initial funding for the Mpilonhle Mobile Health Clinics, was making her second visit to Mpilonhle.  She visited initially in November 2007 when she officially launched the Mpilonhle mobile units.

On this visit, Ms. Theron visited four schools over two days.  On her first afternoon, Ms. Theron visited Silethukukhanya Schools, where she has recently made a donation to help complete a soccer field that was also funded by the South African retailer Woolworths.  Though just off the plane, Ms. Theron watched an exciting match on the just completed field, and then met with students from the school.

On her second day, Ms. Theron saw the mobile units in action at Mbongeni and Nomathiya High Schools.  She then visited one of the most rural schools served by Mpilonhle – Nkosibonga High School in Mdletshe Traditional Area – to meet with the school and local officials, and to discuss prospects for including sports activities as part of the youth efforts of CTAOP and Mpilonhle.

Ms. Theron finished the day with a visit to Mpilonhle offices and a meeting with all of the Mpilonhle staff.  She told the staff “I love you all for your dedication and commitment and I feel that you are making an incalculable contribution to the worldwide effort to create a safer, healthier and better life for impoverished children and their families in South Africa, especially those suffering from HIV/AIDS”.
