Training for Home Based Carers

The Mpilonhle Palliative Care Team conducted training for home based carers through Hlabisa Community Health. The training took place on 9 – 11 February at the Mdletshe Tribal Authority office. You may wonder what is palliative care?

The World Health Organiation defines palliative care as “an approach which improves the quality of life of patients and their families face life-threatening illness, through the prevention, assessment and treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial and spiritual problems”. The Palliative Care Team trained the home based carers in a variety of topics: principles of palliative care, patient rights, pain management, stigma and discrimination, grief and bereavement, family-centered care, continuum of care, counseling, information on TB and ARVs, child development, family planning, nutritional care, childhood grief and wills.

The 3-day training was concluded with an exciting certificate presentation.
